Bosnia’s Security Minister Arrested on Corruption Charges

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Minister of Security, Nenad Nesic, has been arrested on corruption charges. The 46-year-old has agreed to cooperate with the police investigation.

Besides the minister, five other individuals have been detained, according to the public prosecutor. The investigation pertains to Nesic’s tenure as head of Putevi RS, a government infrastructure company, where he served from 2016 to 2020.

He has been the Minister of Security since 2023. Nesic is suspected of conspiracy to commit crimes, money laundering, abuse of office, and accepting bribes.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs anticipates further arrests. Searches have been conducted in Sarajevo, Banja Luka, and Bijeljina.

Nesic, a Bosnian Serb, is also the chairman of the Democratic People’s Union. In the Serbian part of Bosnia, Republika Srpska, he forms a coalition with the party of Prime Minister Dodik, who reacted angrily to his ally’s arrest, claiming the corruption probe aims to “destabilize” Republika Srpska.

Serbia’s Prime Minister, Milos Vucevic, also commented, expressing that Nesic’s arrest brings “a sense of insecurity and unrest for the Serbian people in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
