Border mayors less concerned about new migration checks

Mayors of border municipalities are now less concerned about the nuisance from additional border checks starting Monday, aimed at curbing human smuggling and illegal immigration. Previously, they had concerns about unclear plans and traffic disruptions.

Recent discussions with Minister Faber of Asylum and Migration assured them that the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee would conduct checks with existing personnel, implying little change from current practices. The Marechaussee will focus on information and risk-based checks, minimizing impact on travelers.

The Marechaussees’ union, Marver, also believes effects on border traffic will be minimal, citing limited capacity and past defense budget cuts. Mayor Bengevoord of Winterswijk expressed skepticism, calling it symbolic politics.

Minister Faber trusts in the effectiveness of the checks, asserting that capabilities will be expanded over time.
