The remains of former Surinamese President Bouterse have been seized. This was reported by Abrahams, former vice-chairman of Bouterse’s NDP party, from Bouterse’s residence in Paramaribo, and later confirmed by the Surinamese Public Prosecution Service to news agency ANP.
The reason for the seizure is unclear. Abrahams suspects an autopsy may be conducted, after which the body might be released.
ANP reports a police investigation is also underway, though its focus remains unspecified. The precise cause of death has not been disclosed.
Local media only state that the former president passed away “after a short illness at a hideout.” The 79-year-old Bouterse’s death was confirmed this morning. His body was taken from his home to a mortuary in Paramaribo today.
How his body ended up at his residence is also unknown. Bouterse’s family has not yet released an official statement, but his widow, Ingrid Bouterse-Waldring, posted a message on Facebook expressing gratitude for the support.
Bouterse had been in hiding since his conviction over a year ago for his leadership role in the December Murders, where fifteen of his regime’s opponents were killed in 1982. The body was taken by a funeral director.
