Biden grants clemency to Trump opponents before transition

Outgoing President Biden granted clemency to key opponents of his successor, Donald Trump, just hours before the official power transition. Those pardoned include members of Congress who investigated Trump’s involvement in the Capitol riot, a former Army chief of staff who criticized Trump, and Anthony Fauci, a primary figure in the U.S. COVID-19 response.

Trump had previously expressed intentions to target certain opponents upon regaining power. Biden stated, “My conscience will not allow me to do nothing,” citing the extraordinary circumstances.

He emphasized that the individuals had done nothing wrong and acted appropriately. However, he feared potential reputational harm from Trump’s retaliation despite possible legal vindication.

Alongside Fauci, pardoned individuals include former General Mark Milley and members and staff of the congressional committee that investigated the Capitol riot, such as Republican Congress members Liz Cheney and Adam Kinsinger.
