Berlin zoos close temporarily due to foot-and-mouth outbreak

Two zoos in Berlin are temporarily closed due to a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Tierpark Berlin and Zoo Berlin have shut down in coordination with local authorities.

According to Tierpark Berlin, the zoo is located within the area where the first case of foot-and-mouth disease in Germany was detected. Although no animals in the zoos have been affected, the measure was prompted by the death of three water buffaloes from the disease on a farm in Hönow, near Berlin.

The remaining eleven buffaloes on the farm were culled. The disease is highly contagious among cloven-hoofed animals but poses no risk to humans, although they can carry the virus on items like clothing.

The zoos plan to reopen on Monday.
