Belgium forms new government after seven months

Over seven months after the elections, Belgium has reached a new coalition agreement. The Flemish-nationalist N-VA, the social-democratic Vooruit, the Francophone liberal party MR, and the Christian democrats of CD&V and Les Engagés have agreed on the so-called supernote by formateur Bart De Wever of the N-VA.

This paves the way for De Wever to become the first Flemish-nationalist to lead the Belgian federal government. De Wever, currently the mayor of Antwerp, reported the agreement to King Philippe at the royal palace in Brussels late Friday evening.

“We will have a government that will clean up the budget, implement fair social policies, reward work, introduce the strictest migration policy ever, reverse the nuclear phase-out, and invest in security,” stated his party, the N-VA, in a declaration.
