Belgium and Milan Implement Stricter Smoking Regulations

In Belgium, new regulations prohibit smoking and vaping in public areas such as zoos, petting farms, amusement parks, playgrounds, and sports fields, effective today. Exceptions remain for terraces of hospitality businesses at sports venues, but not in zoos and amusement parks.

Smoking is also banned within ten meters of entrances and exits of healthcare and educational institutions. Violations can result in fines ranging from 208 to 8,000 euros.

The federal government aims for a smoke-free generation by 2040 and will ban disposable vape sales from January 1. In Milan, starting tomorrow, smoking will be prohibited in public spaces unless a ten-meter distance can be maintained.

This measure, part of a campaign to reduce air pollution and promote healthy living, does not apply to vaping. Violators face fines up to 240 euros.

The Netherlands is also considering expanding smoking and vaping bans, with parliamentary support for measures covering sports fields, playgrounds, childcare facilities, day attractions, and outdoor pools.
