Babboe Offers Refunds for Potentially Unsafe Cargo Bikes

Babboe is offering refunds to owners of potentially unsafe cargo bikes, as confirmed to the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). Eligible customers can apply for refunds starting late January.

The sale of these bikes was halted in February by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) due to safety concerns, with reports of frames breaking during use. Several models were deemed unsafe, prompting a recall of tens of thousands of bikes.

While owners could select a replacement bike, some filed complaints with ACM, preferring a refund. The Consumer Association also criticized Babboe’s handling of the situation, noting long waits for inspections, repairs, or replacements.

In consultation with ACM, Babboe has expanded the recall to include refund options based on the bike’s age. Those who have already received a replacement are not eligible for refunds.
