Avans+ University has agreed to pay compensation to all 64 Indonesian nursing students brought to the Netherlands to help with the healthcare burden. Previously, the university had settled with 14 students in court, granting the remaining 50 students €7,000 each, provided they refrain from negative comments about the university, according to RTV Drenthe.
Fifteen students went to court, accusing the university of misleading practices and unpaid relocation allowances. Avans+ attributed the unpaid allowances to complex tax regulations.
Initially, 14 students received a total settlement of €100,000, but the 50 non-litigating students’ compensation has upset those who incurred legal costs. Avans+ has offered an additional €1,000 to the litigating group for legal expenses, with a condition to not speak negatively about the institution.
Avans+ sees this as settling the dispute, but the students’ lawyer claims they are being silenced.
