Austria’s coalition talks face mounting opposition

Coalition talks in Austria for a right-wing government are progressing, with the far-right FPÖ and the Christian Democratic ÖVP starting substantive negotiations. As the prospect of an FPÖ-led government becomes realistic, opposition from social organizations, the business sector, and other political parties is increasing.

Previously, the ÖVP and other parties refused to form a coalition with the FPÖ while the controversial Herbert Kickl led it. However, negotiations began once ÖVP Chancellor Nehammer stepped down, removing the blockade, with Kickl as the prospective chancellor.
