Arrest of Turkish TV Chief Sparks Political Controversy

The editor-in-chief of Turkish broadcaster Halk TV, Suat Toktas, has been arrested and imprisoned. According to the state news agency Anadolu, Toktas is accused of attempting to influence an expert witness in a legal case involving Istanbul’s mayor by publishing a secretly recorded phone interview.

Toktas claims he was merely performing his duties as a journalist. Earlier this week, four other Halk TV journalists were detained in relation to the same case, including renowned investigative journalist Baris Pehlivan, who conducted the interview.

They were released after questioning but remain under judicial monitoring. Toktas is the only one imprisoned.
