The city of Amsterdam plans to expand soccer opportunities for women and girls by investing 2.5 million euros. This investment will support the creation of more girls’ teams and the recruitment of female trainers, coaches, and board members.
According to sports alderman Sofyan Mbarki, there are still too few clubs with sections for young women, despite the growing popularity of women’s soccer. For instance, Southeast Amsterdam has no active girls’ soccer department in 2024, forcing girls to travel to other areas like East.
The financial support aims to establish eight “girls’ hubs” in strategic locations within the city, which will be backed by the municipality to increase participation. The goal is for all girls and women in Amsterdam to have access to a club within a 3-kilometer radius.
The city also aims to increase the number of female sports officials, currently below 15 percent, and plans to organize an annual international tournament for four women’s teams.
