The protest is scheduled for this afternoon in front of The Diamond Hotel at Leidseplein. Dingeman Coumou, organizer of Amsterdam’s first demonstration against mass tourism, criticizes the hotel for attracting more tourists and being aesthetically displeasing.
This protest follows similar events in cities like Barcelona and Venice. In 2023, Amsterdam recorded approximately 22 million overnight stays, and this number is expected to rise to between 22.9 and 25.4 million in 2024, according to Amsterdam’s research agency, O&S. This exceeds the agreed limit of 20 million, established under the 2021 Tourism in Balance ordinance, which mandates measures to combat tourism-related nuisances.
