To alleviate parking congestion in Amsterdam, the city council is advising drivers to park in nearby towns such as Haarlem, Almere, Hoorn, or Sassenheim. A city spokesperson told AT5 that the goal is to intercept car visitors at regional parking lots.
However, not all neighboring areas welcome this recommendation. Parking in Amsterdam has been a significant issue for decades, leading to the development of Park and Ride (P+R) facilities on the city’s outskirts.
Recently, the number of spaces at these facilities has decreased due to urban development projects, like the loss of 200 spaces in Zeeburg for new housing and 300 spaces in Amsterdam-Noord for a power station. Consequently, the city suggests alternative parking locations with available spaces.
Although some towns express concerns about increased pressure on their P+R facilities, others see the benefits. Hoorn appreciates being mentioned as an alternative, anticipating reduced traffic congestion.
Haarlemmermeer’s councilor Marja Ruigrok supports promoting P+R Nieuw Vennep to encourage travelers to switch to public transport earlier in their journey.
