The new American comedy series “Going Dutch,” aired on Fox, portrays a range of clichés about the Netherlands, from tulips and windmills to a laid-back sexual morality and frequent drug use. The show features Denis Leary as Patrick Quinn, a stern military commander assigned to what he calls “the world’s least important base” in the Netherlands.
The humor derives from the stark contrasts between Quinn’s ambition and the relaxed Dutch culture. The series, largely filmed in Ireland without Dutch involvement, presents exaggerated depictions, including a Dutch character played by an Icelandic actor.
British comedian Catherine Tate stars as Katja Vanderhoff, with an unplaceable Dutch accent, adding to the show’s caricature. Critics have mixed opinions, with Variety suggesting the series has potential for cultural clash humor but needs time to mature.
Despite a moderate start with 1.3 million viewers, the series has struggled to maintain its audience. A new episode titled “Nazi Hunters” airs tonight in the U.S.
