AI usage in media raises concerns over accuracy

Author Thomas Heerma van Voss was surprised to find an inaccurate description of his book “Het Archief” in Harper’s Bazaar. He suspected the use of artificial intelligence for the summary and reached out to the magazine, requesting the removal of the article and a correction, though neither apology nor acknowledgment of AI use was received.

Heerma van Voss criticized the incident as harmful, emphasizing the need for media to avoid becoming sources of misinformation. Journalist Laurens Vreekamp noted that AI-generated content can be linguistically correct but factually wrong and is often used in the US for traffic-based websites.

Media experts stress the importance of transparency when using AI tools, although missteps like inaccurate obituaries in a Belgian newspaper have occurred. Both Vreekamp and media researcher Hannes Cools advocate for clear disclaimers when AI is used.

The incident raises broader questions about AI’s role in publishing.
