AI Music Models Under Scrutiny for Copyright Use

With just a few clicks, artificial intelligence (AI) can now create brand-new music tracks in minutes. Today, BumaStemra, an advocate for music creators, went to Brussels to persuade Members of the European Parliament that these AI models should not use existing music by artists without permission.

Michiel Laan, BumaStemra’s commercial director, stated that many AI systems currently use artists’ and composers’ songs to train their AI without seeking approval. He emphasized the need for AI companies to obtain licenses for using music, which is not currently a standard practice.

Due to this, artists could miss out on significant earnings, estimated at $4 billion annually.
