Accidents Across the Netherlands Due to Icy Conditions

Icy conditions this morning led to several accidents in the north, east, and south of the Netherlands. Many cars skidded off the roads and cyclists fell.

In Deventer, a cyclist was seriously injured at 08:30 on an extremely slippery intersection, as reported by regional broadcaster Oost. Earlier, multiple accidents occurred on the IJsseldijk between Deventer and Olst.

At 06:15, a car with two occupants veered off the road and hit a tree; both were hospitalized with unspecified injuries. Shortly after, another car slipped in a bend, crashed through a fence, and ended up in a garden; the driver was unharmed.

The IJsseldijk is now fully closed, with stranded traffic, including several trucks, allowed to proceed only when conditions improve. On Oldenzaalsestraat in Rossum, a motorist was seriously injured after crashing into a tree at 07:15.

Police are investigating if ice was a factor. In Groningen, numerous cycling accidents occurred, but no injuries were reported, according to RTV Noord.

In Tilburg, a neighborhood officer warned of icy conditions, noting many vehicle collisions and cyclist falls. In Breda, a scooter rider was injured in a fall.

Last night near Wirdum, Friesland, three cars went off the road following a hailstorm, with three people injured, as reported by Omrop Fryslân. No major incidents were reported on highways, and Rijkswaterstaat spread nearly 1.9 million kilograms of salt over 28,000 kilometers of road overnight.

KNMI issued a yellow warning for ice in the north and east earlier, which is expected to clear by midday. A yellow warning for snow is issued for Limburg this evening.
